Preparing Our Hearts Through Silence — Michael Coston
No. 353 — Ash Wednesday
O God, maker of everything and judge of all that you have made, from the dust of the earth you have formed us and from the dust of death you would raise us up. By the redemptive power of the cross, create in us clean hearts and put within us a new spirit, that we may repent of our sins and lead lives worthy of your calling; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Responsive Greeting
Leader: The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast
love. He will not always accuse, nor will he keep his anger forever.
Congregation: From dust we have come, to dust we shall return.
Leader: He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our
iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him.
Congregation: From dust we have come, to dust we shall return.
Leader: As far as the east is from the west, so far he removes our transgressions from us.
Congregation: From dust we have come, to dust we shall return.
Leader: As a father has compassion for his children, so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him. For he knows how we were made; he remembers that we are dust.
Congregation: From dust we have come, to dust we shall return.
Leader: As for mortals, their days are like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.
Congregation: From dust we have come, to dust we shall return.
Leader: But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments.
Congregation: From dust we have come, to dust we shall return.

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us pray:
Almighty God, You have created us out of the dust of the earth. Grant that these ashes may be to us a sign of our mortality and penitence, so we may remember that only by your gracious gift are we given everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.
